The POOL project gave Pierre-Lou the chance to try his hand at filming and recording sounds in the Finnish forest. You can watch the short film on the YouTube channel of the Faculty of Science at the University of Turku.

Among Evo’s Vernal Pools – A Fragile Abundance Beneath Our Feet

An immersion into the vernal pools of the Evo boreal forest. Sit down, take your time. Observe, listen…

The still reflection of birches on the water’s surface, the shimmer of sunlight on green sphagnum moss, or the song of a thrush, punctuated by the drumming of a great spotted woodpecker. The quiet passage of a toad, the teeming of aquatic larvae and, later in the season, their imagos moving through the quivering vegetation…

In the Finnish forest, these temporary wetlands host a rich biodiversity, closely tied to fluctuations in water levels. They punctuate the forest with oases of life, in a singular atmosphere that shifts with the seasons.

These habitats are fragile, often overlooked, and rarely protected.
